Along with seven other esports titles, Arena of Valor or AOV has been included in the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China, as one of the prestigious games.

The Asian Games are a continental multi-sport event held every four years among athletes from across Asia. The event has been one of the largest sporting events in the world, second only to the Olympics, since the 1951 Asian Games, hosted by New Delhi, India.

While the 2018 Asian Games, held in Jakarta, Indonesia, introduced esports, it was a demonstration event, and therefore medals were not counted in the final tally.

However, for the upcoming 2022 Asian Games, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has decided to include eight esports titles under the discipline, with two additional demonstration titles. One of them is the AOV game.

Arena of Valor (AOV) is a multiplayer online battle arena developed by TiMi Studio Group and published by Tencent Games for Android, iOS, and Nintendo Switch. The game has found popularity in Asian markets, including China, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia.

A 5 versus 5 ranking match, better known as the Grand Battle, where the Player is tasked with destroying the enemy turrets on the map and securing objectives such as killing the Abyssal Dragon and Dark Slayer, provided that victory destroys the enemy's core. An average match lasts for about 12 – 18 minutes.

There are a total of 108 heroes in the Arena of Valor to choose from, and heroes are further categorized into one of six classes, depending on their playstyle. The roles are as follows;

  • Marksman – Ranged heroes that usually deal physical damage mostly through their automatic attacks. 
  • Mage – A mix of ranged heroes, who deal damage from afar, or melee heroes, who deal damage from close range.
  • Assassin – Heroes designed to deal large amounts of damage quickly, and often don't have a lot of health.
  • Tank – A hero that has a large amount of HP and is usually built fully defensive to be able to absorb damage for the team.
  • Warrior – A hero that combines the attributes of a damage dealer and a tank, combining defensive abilities.
  • Support – Hero whose ability to help other team members by providing healing, buffing allies, debuffing the enemy team.

Over the years, Arena of Valor has built a thriving esports community in and across the Asian continent. In addition to small and medium independent tournaments, AOV has two major international tournaments, AIC and AWC, which are hosted by Tencent.

Arena of Valor International Championship

The Arena of Valor International Championship, more commonly referred to as AIC, is one of the two major annual international Arena of Valor tournaments.

The main event of AIC 2020 takes place between 19 November and 20 December 2020, with a total prize pool of $500,000/- USD. MAD Teams won the 2020 title with Saigon Phantom being the first runner-up.

The fifth season of the Arena of Valor International Championship (AIC) is currently underway. The tournament is an online affair with teams from the Asian region competing for the massive prize pool of $1 million.

Today, being the last of the championships, two teams from Thailand and Vietnam, namely Buriram United Esports and V Gaming, have made it to the finals and will soon be competing in BO7 format to determine the winner of the 2021 Arena of Valor International Championship. .

During the live broadcast, the 2022 esports roadmap for the title was announced. Speaking on the occasion, Brend Gottsman, Head of Global Esports Center at Tencent Games Global, revealed many details.

AoV: World Cup, scheduled for October 2022, will feature a massive prize pool of $10 million. This prize pool is the largest for a single event in mobile esports history. The World Cup will feature teams from around the world, and according to Gottsman, it will be the pinnacle of AOV esports.

He also revealed that Tencent plans to expand into the worldwide AoV esports scene, a process that means adding more territories to the ecosystem.

Arena of Valor World Cup

The Arena of Valor World Cup (AWC), along with AIC, is one of Tencent's major Arena of Valor tournaments. However, while the organizers represent the teams at AIC, the AWC teams represent their respective countries.

The Arena of Valor World Cup 2021 takes place between 19 June and 18 July 2021, with a total prize pool of $500,000/- USD. The dtac Talon Esports took the title for Thailand.

Esports Arena of Valor is growing rapidly. There is a large player base in South Asian countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand and other Asian countries such as Taiwan, China and Japan.

With its wide popularity among Asian countries, Arena of Valor makes sense as one of the top choices for inclusion in the esports discipline. Apart from that, the game's ease of access and low spec requirements make it quite approachable.
