According to animenewsnetwork, The 19th edition of Captain Tsubasa Magazine published Friday, December 30 2023 published by Shueisha announced something surprising.

Shueisha Inc announced that the Mangaka from Captain Tsubasa, Yōichi Takahashi, will retire from the Tsubasa series which he has created for 43 years.

However, Yōichi Takahashi will continue to produce the manga until the final chapter of Captain Tsubasa: Rising Sun The Final and Captain Tsubasa Memories 4: Saikyō! The 20th edition of the Meiwa FC Densetsu manga will be released in April 2024.

The publisher also stated that the 63 year old manga artist decided to retire due to his declining health condition.

"Instead of pushing myself to the limit, it's better to stop serialization so that I can tell the story of Captain Tsubasa until the end," he said as quoted by animenewsnetwork published on Friday (05/01) yesterday.

According to comicbook.com, he also said that he wanted to maintain his physical condition at a young age.

Currently he is still in good health but because of the presbyopia he experiences, he loses his eyes' ability to focus and his vision begins to decline slowly so he finds it difficult to produce his manga.

“I think I am still in good health today. However, as I continued to create manga, the age-related decline in my physical condition became unavoidable. My drawing speed has slowed down a lot… (and) moreover, my eyesight is getting worse. It's hard to focus," he said.

Apart from his health condition which caused him to have to retire, it turns out there was something else too. As the digitization process has increasingly developed since COVID-19, the process of making manga manually will be slowly replaced.

However, as stated, Yōichi Takahashi will continue producing the manga until April 2024.

After retiring, he will create a storyboard for the animated Captain Tsubasa instead of writing the manga.
