Pokemon Unite giving you access to a wide variety of playable Pokemon, but none quite as terrifying as the truly terrifying Gengar. So without further ado, here is a guide on the best way to play this Pokemon.
Pokemon Unite is finally here and many mobile gamers are excited about its release. While there is a wide list of Pokemon to choose from, Gengar seems to be one of the strongest for both offensive and fast action.
Interestingly, this Pokemon is registered as a Speedster, meaning its job is to overwhelm enemies with damage and confuse enemies with blinding speed. However, Gengar is also part of the melee spec, making him a tough character to play well.
In fact, this Pokemon also comes with an 'Expert' difficulty level. To play Gengar, you need to be quick, accurate, and adaptable to the moves.
Gengar Build – The Best Unite Pokemon!
Build Gengar
Evolution
Gengar starts the game as a simple Gastly, but at level 5 he turns into a Haunter. Lastly, at level 9 the Haunter will evolve into a Gengar.
Unique Ability
- Levitate – When a Pokemon is not in battle, its movement speed increases.
- Basic Attack – Becomes an increased attack with every third attack, lunging at opposing Pokemon and dealing damage.
Moves
Levels 1/3
The same rule applies to all Pokemon in Pokemon Unite, you can choose one of two moves to change your strategy for each game. However, keep in mind that alternative abilities will also be unlocked at level 3.
Will-O-Wisp – Cooldown 5s – shoots some evil flames, dealing damage to opposing Pokemon and letting them burn on hit.
Lick – Cooldown 7s – Attacks with the player's tongue and pulls the opposing Pokemon towards the player.
Will-O-Wisp is the optimal choice for this Pokemon because it can attack from a distance and has a shorter cooldown. Alternatively, choose Lick if you want to annoy the enemy team and make securing kills easier for your teammates.
Level 5
Shadowball – Cooldown 4.5s – Throws a shadow blob at the target, reducing movement speed and Sp. Def the opposing Pokemon for a short time when hit.
Upgrades: Increases the damage dealt by this move
Sludge Bombs – Cooldown 8s – Throws dirty mud in a designated area, poisoning opposing Pokemon when hit.
Upgrades: Increases the duration of the poison's effect
Sludge Bomb is the best choice for Gengar at this stage of the game due to the nature of the AOE attack. Furthermore, Hex can be used together to reduce the cooldown time of this move.
Level 7
Dream Eaters – Cooldown 8s – Sleeps an opposing Pokemon on hit. If used again when the nearby opposing Pokemon is asleep, the player will appear behind the sleeping Pokemon and attack, restoring the player's HP and reducing Shadowball or Sludge Bomb cooldown.
Upgrade: Increases the amount of damage dealt and HP recovered with this move.
Hex – Cooldown 7.5s – Makes the player disappear and move to a specified location, dealing damage to opposing Pokemon in the area of effect when the player reappears. If it hits an opposing Pokemon hit by a status condition, it deals increased damage and reduces its cooldown.
Upgrades: Increases the damage dealt by this move
Without a doubt, Hex is the best move for Gengar. While that gives Gengar the ability to travel through walls to surprise enemies or flee from danger, it can also provide a neat cooldown reduction. Hex must be used to launch on poisoned targets.
Level 9
Unite Move – Phantom Ambush – Makes the player jump into a designated area and start sneaking with increased movement speed. If Unite Move is used again, it will deal damage to opposing Pokemon in the area of effect and reduce their movement speed for a short time.
As a sneaky ability, Gengar's Unite Move should be used to initiate team fights by jumping into battle from behind or from the flanks. This is a very powerful ability, so don't waste it if you don't have a team to support you.

Gengar Pokemon Unite strategy
- The key to playing this Pokemon is all in its damage and hit-and-run playstyle. You want to play Gengar quietly, hiding in the bushes and working your way to the outskirts for farming points. However, you will want to help your teammates with an effective gank and coordinating with allies.
- Sludge Bomb and Hex will deal AOE damage, make sure you use Hex as a means of mobility to get around the map and to surprise enemies.
- Sludge Bomb to Hex to Hex is again an effective combo. Gengar's Unite Move should always be used to start a fight, and X-Attack should be used right before that.
