How Many Pokemon Are There Until Now?
Pokemon is one of the best game franchises in the world. First released in 1996, this franchise has been able to survive for decades. Uniquely, this game has never left the Nintendo ecosystem!
Of course, this is a different formula if you look at other successful game titles, most of which adopt a multi-platform concept.
If you only count the main generations (without considering other spin-off and canon games), so far there are 9 generations that have been released.
And in each of them a new type of Pokemon is introduced. There are a total of 1010 Pokémon that are available out there. Here are the release details in each generation:
Number of First Generation Pokemon
The first generation was released in the same year as this franchise. The name of the region in this first generation is taken based on one of the areas in Tokyo, namely Kanto. This generation introduced 151 Pokemon.
Number of Second Generation Pokemon
The second generation was released in 1999, with a region named Johto. This region is still inspired by one of the regions in Japan, namely Kansai. Even though in this second generation there are still several Pokemon from Gen. 1, but in total there are 100 new Pokemon that appear.
Number of Third Generation Pokemon
Next up is Gen. 3, which was first introduced in 2002. Its region is called Hoenn, used to promote the island region of Kyushu, Japan. Here are 135 new Pokemon that are included in the total Pokedex list.
Number of Fourth Generation Pokemon
In the fourth generation (released in 2006), the next region is Sinnoh. Hokkaido is the background for setting the region. In total there were 107 additional Pokemon released.
Number of Fifth Generation Pokemon
Moving on to the fifth generation is the Unova region (2011). This is the first Pokemon installation based in a region outside Japan, namely New York. 156 Pokemon were introduced, and is the most generation that released a new lineup.
Number of Pokemon of the Sixth Generation
In the sixth generation there are an additional 72 Pokemon in National Dex. Released in 2013, the region called Kalos was inspired by the 'City of Love': Paris. Going forward, various regions in Pokemon will continue to adapt to regions outside of Japan.
Number of Seventh Generation Pokemon
The seventh generation is synonymous with the Alola region. As the name suggests, this region is inspired by the word 'Aloha' which refers to the American state of Hawaii, namely Hawaii. Distributed in 206, there are 86 new Pokemon along with a modified form in this generation called Alolan.
Eighth Generation
Entering the eighth generation in 2019, 96 new Pokemon have appeared in the Galar region. Again, this generation region was adapted from a country on the European continent. If Kalos is taken from Paris, then Galar is its 'neighbor', namely Great Britain.
Ninth Generation
And finally, the new release in 2023 is the ninth generation. The region named Paldea still faithfully defends the European region, this time especially the Latin plains (Spain and Portugal). In total there are 114 new Pokemon that you can catch in this latest installation.
