This animated film from Ghibli is set in 1942 when Japan was in the midst of the Pacific War against the Allies.

One night, a young boy named Mahito Maki wakes up after hearing news that the hospital where his mother works is on fire.

Mahito's mother, Hisako, died in the fire tragedy. The tragedy caused Mahito and his father, Shoichi (Takuya Kimura), to leave Tokyo a few years after Hisako's death.

They decide to move to the countryside and live in a house occupied by Natsuko (Yoshino Kimura) and her maids. Natsuko, who is married and pregnant, tries to get close to Mahito.

However, because Mahito was still grieving over his mother's death, he treated Natsuko, who became his stepmother, coldly.

In addition, when moving to his new house, Mahito meets a mysterious gray heron aka The Grey Heron (Masaki Suda). The bird guides Mahito to a mysterious tower located not far from his house.

One day, the grey crane tells Mahito that his mother is still alive. On the other hand, Natsuko suddenly disappears from her room.

The series of events leads Mahito to chase the gray babgau bird to find his mother and Natsuko. He is then transported to a magical world that is different from the normal world.
