For fans of the turn-based RPG genre, Megami Tensei titles are certainly no longer foreign. This franchise has grown so massively that it has finally produced various game installations.

Few people understand that this franchise was first released as a continuation of a novel with the same title which was already famous in Japan. As a result, in 1987, the first installation was released.

Known by the nickname Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei, RPG games This unique thing is that it has a turn-based first person that is thick with dungeon crawling gameplay! It's no surprise that this game has received such a good reception!

And only three years later, Namco (as the originator of this franchise) finally released the second sequel.

There is no clear news about how this franchise ended up in the hands of Atlus. However, it was only in 1992 that Atlus released the title Shin Megami Tensei (SMT), which eventually became a trademark to this day.

As it developed, there were so many sequels and spin-offs that revolved around the storytelling of this universe. Until the latest one was finally released in 2021, marking the fifth sequel to this franchise.

Before announcing the continuation of the fourth sequel, which was first released in 2013, Atlus itself first experimented with several quite iconic titles.

Some of them include SMT IV: Apocalypse which can be said to be a sequel to "4.5" (after 4 but before 5); Strange Journey Redux (enhanced version); Liberation Dx2 (mobile); and III Remastered.

It was only in 2017 (along with the announcement of the release of the Nintendo Switch), that Atlus announced the follow-up title numbered 5.

This installation was developed using Unreal Engine 4: a first for the franchise. As a result, development took 3 years, considering the level of difficulty of the porting and adjustment efforts.

However, the developer's prolonged efforts have yielded quite positive results, given the good reception it has received from various industry critics.

It wouldn't be Atlus if it didn't release enhanced editions for its various successful line-ups. And this was done again with the release of SMT 5: Vengeance.

Apart from bringing the story from the "vanilla" version (2021), this edition is also equipped with an additional storyline (canon). So, it's fair to say that this is an expansion.

Later players will be able to choose two branches: Canon of Creation which was presented in the original 2021 version and Canon of Vengeance as the newest feature.

This branching can only be felt in the middle of the story plot towards the end (mid-end game). Meanwhile, for the early to mid sections, the two versions can be said to be quite similar.

Not only that, this enhanced edition also presents new maps and dungeons as Atlus's efforts to improve the quality of life (QoL Improvement) of this re-released game.

Of course, the hope is that those who have bought the original edition will be interested in buying this enhanced edition again. But for those non-Switch gamers, this edition is certainly worth spending time on!

For those interested, in addition to being ported again to Nintendo Switch, SMT 5: Vengeance is also available for PlayStation (4 & 5), Xbox (One & Series S/X), as well as Windows!
