Before going into the main discussion about the remake version, it would be better to discuss the original edition first. Yep, this game that is more than a decade old has left quite an impression on the hearts of its fanbase.

First released in 2013, the original edition did not include the 'Returns' tagline in its title. The game, developed by a studio called Hopoo Games, has a unique trivial fact!

After further investigation, it turns out that the game development effort was only pioneered by two students from the University of Washington! The pilot project was even funded only through the Kickstarter site!

The process is fairly simple: built using the GameMaker engine. Developed for the Windows platform, the devs then also released OS X and Linux versions.

Meanwhile, the console versions themselves are released periodically: PS4 and Vita (2016), Nintendo Switch (2018), and Xbox One (2019). And seeing the good reception it received, this game became a franchise.

Risk of Rains Sequel

The official start of this franchise was actually marked since the release of its sequel which was given the number '2'. This coincided with the entry games to digital and physical store shelves in August 2020.

There are quite a lot of changes that can be seen in the RoR 2 sequel, the most obvious of which is the graphics line which has received significant improvements as well as the genre that is carried.

In its first installation, the game was made using 2-dimensional (2D) cartoon graphics that wrapped a platforming genre gameplay. Not only that, the presence of the roguelike theme is also very thick here.

Then all of this disappeared in the sequel: the graphics were changed to 3D, and the genre transformed into a third-person shooter (TPS). At first glance, the franchise seemed to lose its identity.

Even so, RoR still managed to gain praise in the eyes of the gaming industry. Not a few critics and gaming reviewers gave good testimonials. This is what then "smoothed the way" for them to become a franchise.

From the success of both installations, the dev team finally had more freedom to work on subsequent projects that they deemed worthy of being presented as the franchise's line-up.

And of course it would be a shame if they missed the remake/remaster game trend that is currently being practiced by many gaming publishers/distributors.

That's where they finally decided to remake their first installation. As a form of celebration of their decade in the gaming industry, Risk of Rain Returns was finally released.

Although most aspects of the original installation are maintained, several updates are also presented so that the quality of life of this game has improved.

Some of the new things include enriching the codebase to facilitate future content updates, more modern graphics, the addition of co-op features, and the inclusion of soundtracks and monsters from RoR 2.
