In singleplayer mode, you will control 3 character namely Michael De Sante, Trevor Philips, and Franklin Clinton. They are criminals who are connected to each other as many missions are completed.

Some missions in this game can be completed with only one character and other missions with 2 to 3 characters.

Outside of missions, players can switch between characters as they wish, although this feature is limited to several points throughout the story.

Although most missions are completed with the above 3 characters, the more difficult theft missions require assistance from AI-controlled characters.

This AI character has the ability to hack computers and drive. If an accomplice manages to escape the robbery mission, they will charge you for it.

Each character has 8 skills that represent their abilities in specific areas such as shooting and driving.

These 8 special skills determine the effectiveness of their ability to perform unique skills that suit their character.

Michael can enter bullets time in battle, Franklin can slow down time while riding, and Trevor deals double damage to enemies.

The meter on the character's HUD will decrease when their unique skill is used and will refill when performing skilled activities, such as drifting as Franklin and headshot as Michael.
