Use the WiFi Cracker Application

You may have heard about WiFi cracker apps that supposedly can crack your neighbor's WiFi password or public hotspots. Some examples of apps that are often mentioned:

But, before you just download and try it, it's better to first understand how it works, plus the big risks you'll face.

Download the app (usually from a third-party site, since it's not available on the Play Store). Scan nearby WiFi networks. Try cracking the password using brute force or exploiting a security hole.

Many fake apps actually carry viruses or malware. If the WiFi owner finds out, you can be reported to the police!

Take Advantage of Weak WPS

WPS (WiFi Protected Setup) is actually a feature that is made so that we can connect to WiFi more easily, without having to enter a long password. Usually, it works using a physical PIN on the router or a WPS button that can be pressed.

There are several tools that can be used to try cracking WPS, including:

Reaver

This tool can try brute force WPS PIN until it finds the correct combination. Here's how:

  1. Install Reaver on your laptop (you can use Kali Linux or Termux on your cellphone),
  2. Scan WiFi networks that have WPS enabled,
  3. Run Reaver to try all possible PINs.

Bully

Similar to Reaver, but faster and more efficient. Bully can guess WPS PIN using Pixie-Dust attack (special technique for exploiting WPS).

Phishing Using Fake WiFi

If you’ve ever heard of “WiFi phishing”, this is one sneaky way to steal people’s data by creating a fake WiFi network:

  1. Make Fake WiFi
    • Hackers create hotspots with names that are similar to legit WiFi, for example:
      • Free_WiFi_Mall” (even though the mall actually has official WiFi).
      • “ABC_Boarding_House_Free” (even though it doesn’t exist).
    • Sometimes the signal is deliberately made stronger so that victims prefer to connect to this fake WiFi.
  2. Unknowing Connect Victims
    • People who need free WiFi will connect without suspicion.
    • Usually, hackers don't give passwords or use common passwords like "12345678".
  3. Data Theft Begins!
    • Once the victim connects, hackers can spy on internet activity (social media logins, e-banking, etc.).

WiFi phishing is not a cool hack, but a cyber crime that can harm many people.

Try Default Router Password

One of the methods that is often tried to hack WiFi is by using the router's default password.

Usually, WiFi owners who are not very tech-savvy forget or are too lazy to change the default password on their devices.

  1. Typically, routers have IP addresses like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1,
  2. Open a browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc.), then type that address in the address bar,
  3. Some commonly used default combinations: Username: admin | Password: admin,
  4. If successful, you can access the router settings,
  5. In the settings menu, look for an option like “Wireless Settings” or “Security”. There is usually a saved WiFi password there.

WiFi Hacking Risk

Not just "just for fun," breaking into WiFi can bring big problems for you. First, from a legal perspective, Article 30 of the ITE Law clearly prohibits illegal access to other people's networks.

If caught, you could be fined up to billions of rupiah or even jail time! Just imagine, just because you wanted free internet, you ended up dealing with the cyber police—it’s not worth it, right?

In addition, your digital security is also at risk. When you try to hack WiFi, there is a possibility that your device will be hacked back or infected with malware.

It's possible that your personal data, such as social media passwords, e-banking, or private photos, could be stolen by someone else.

Not to mention if the WiFi owner installs tracking, your activities can be discovered and reported. Ugh, it's better to just buy an internet package than to bother with things like this.
