How to Get Master Ball in Pokemon Go

After years since the first Pokemon Go game was released, finally the Master Ball is here in this game.

The Master Ball is the most iconic Pokemon-catching device of all time. He first appears in the game Pokémon Red and Blue from the main series.

The Master Ball has a very special property, as it has a catch rate of 100% on any Pokémon you use.

New Master Balls were added to Pokemon Go as part of seasonal or timed research quests.

The first chance to get one is with the “Masterwork Research: Master Ball” research quest, which debuted on Friday, October 4, as part of Season 16: Max Out.

Unlike previous Master Ball research, which was free for all players, this is part of a premium research pass that costs $ 8, and is available for purchase until the “Galarian Expedition” event ends on October 11, 2024.

Once purchased, it will remain in the Special Research tab, meaning there is no time limit to complete each step.

If you're reading this page past that date, unfortunately the quest is no longer available. Hopefully Master Ball will be back (for free) soon!

Can You Get More Than One Master Ball in Pokemon Go?

Unlike the main games where Master Balls are often one-off items, it's possible to get more than one Master Ball in Pokemon Go.

So far, he has debuted in four seasons, namely Season 10, Season 12, Season 14, and Season 16 as a mix of free Special and Timed Research.

Current track record suggests a new Master Ball will be available every other season – meaning we can expect a fifth Master Ball as part of Season 18 between March and June 2025.

You can carry more than one Master Ball at a time, so you're not sure you have to use it now and can keep it in your inventory for a while.

The Right Time to Use Master Ball in Pokemon Go

Master Balls are extremely rare, and with a catch rate of 100%, are ideally only used in very specific circumstances.

Here we have some recommendations for the best use of the Master Ball:

  • Galarian Articuno, Zapdos, or Moltres found while using Daily Adventure Incense, which currently has a catch rate of 0.3% and an escape rate of 90%, and is arguably the hardest Pokemon to catch in the game.
  • A high IV legendary encounter after a raid that you want to level up, like Mewtwo. We recommend using the regular Premier Ball set first, then using the Master Ball as a last resort.
  • Very rare wild encounters like the “Lake Trio” of Uxie, Mesprit or Azelf, or Unown – the exceptions for Unown are letters/shapes you already have, or if they appear during an event, when they are much more common.
  • Pokémon are shiny in the wild. Some exceptions to this include encounters after raids, and during events like Community Day, when shinies are much more common.
