Sony Releases AI Driver Trial in Gran Turismo 7, Limited Time

Sony yesterday, on March 1, 2023, has just released a major update for the game Gran Turismo 7.

The update to v1.29 brings lots of updates, such as support for PSVR2, new cars, and new tracks. 

Apart from that, there is also an AI improvement called GT Sophy.

With this AI, Sony wants to offer players to challenge the AI for a limited time for a special event.

Overview of Gran Turismo 7

For those who don't know, Gran Turismo 7 was launched by Sony last year, and at the start of its release the AI driver was criticized because the AI was too predictable and still very limited. 

Now, GT Sophy has progressed by learning many things from all of his training. Some of the results of its development include GT Sophy who has been able to choose the right moment to ensure that he continues to lead the race. 

Of course, this ability will not be possessed by ordinary AI.

AI GT Sophy development

Sony founded its AI lab in 2020, and Sophy was one of the lab's first major innovations.

GT Sophy is the subject of a study published in Nature last year. The AI team believes that racing simulators are excellent testing grounds for real-world AI problems. 

Later, when racing with multiple players, GT Sophy will automatically improve his skills, and that makes his speed really terrible. 

Many players in this game can easily beat the usual AI. However, to beat Sophy's GT they found it very difficult to do so.

That's because the AI driver is trained through reinforcement learning, by providing triggers such as rewarding the AI for doing something right. 

Through thousands of race simulations, AI not only learns the rules of the game, but also evolves to be able to overtake the players.

Ways to Challenge GT Sophy

Gran Turismo 7 players who want to challenge AI GT Sophy can go through the new Race Together mode. 

You can challenge the AI in one of four different races, from beginner to expert levels. 

GT Sophy has a different car for each race, apart from that there is also a 1 vs 1 mode available where you can race against the AI with the same car.

However, there are no prizes for winning this race, and this mode will only be available until March 31, 2023. 

This is still limited because Sony said that the GT Sophy is currently still under development. So Sony uses this event as a test for better development in the future.

What you need to know is that you cannot start racing with GT Sophy right away. Because Race Together mode is only available for players who have reached Collector Level 6.
