This story takes its main setting at Tōtsuki Culinary Academy (Tōtsuki Saryō Ryōri Gakuen), an elite culinary institution located in downtown Tokyo, Japan.

Only a handful of students who successfully pass the rigorous exams graduate each year, adding an element of exclusivity to the school.

Although most of the students come from Totsuki junior high school, transfer acceptance is still allowed for those who successfully pass the entrance exam.

The campus is not only a school, but also a sprawling resort with various research societies (clubs), modern cooking classrooms, and a large arena used for various fierce cooking competitions.

Student housing varies, but the most affordable is the Polaris Dormitory, where students must impress the matron with a special meal in order to earn a place to stay.

In addition, Tōtsuki operates a series of resort hotels, with the largest resort run by Gin Dojima being a prominent place visited by Soma during his first year at Tōtsuki.

The best student chefs at Tōtsuki Culinary Academy hold prestigious positions within the Council of Ten Masters, the school's top governing body with a position comparable to that of the school's director.

Students have the right to start a shokugeki (anime: food fight), a cooking competition with various conditions and stakes, either against fellow students or alumni.

Such fights can range from fighting over cooking utensils, research club facilities, board membership, to the risk of expulsion from school. The dynamics of shokugeki create an atmosphere of fierce competition among students, adding to the excitement and tension of culinary life at Tōtsuki.
