The Activision Company as the origin of this company was first founded in 1979 as a third-party developer for games from the Atari Video Computer System.

In 1988, the company expanded into non-gaming software creation and changed its name to Mediagenic.

Instead of making a profit, the company actually received a huge loss. In 1991, a group of investors led by Bobby Kotick then bought this company.

Kotick then undertook major restructuring to minimize debt, including renaming the company Activision and moving it to Santa Monica, California.

The company returned to profitability in 1997. Kotick spent the next decade expanding their production by acquiring around 25 studios.

Thanks to this, Activision has been able to produce and release various highly successful game series such as Crash Bandicoot, Guitar Hero, and Call of Duty.

Around 2006, Kotick entered into negotiations with Jean-Bernard Levy who is the CEO of the French media conglomerate, Vivendi.

At that time Vivendi had its own division for video games, a holding company for Sierra Entertainment and Blizzard Entertainment.

Kotick wanted access to World of Warcraft, Levy's successful MMO game. Levy offers to enter into a company merger if Vivendi gains majority control.

Kotick then submitted a proposal for a merger to Activision's board of directors, which was approved in December 2007. The company was then named Activision Blizzard.

Bobby Kotick was appointed as the new president and CEO while Vivendi's René Penisson was appointed chairman.

Until now, they already have 5 business units namely Activision Publishing, King, Major League Gaming, Blizzard Entertainment, and Activision Blizzard Studios.

In March 2018, Activision Blizzard was listed as the game company with the largest revenue and market capitalization in America and Europe.

Microsoft Acquisition Plan

Microsoft announced that they will be acquiring the company for $68.7 billion in a cash transaction or approximately $95 per share.

If this plan is successful, Microsoft will become the third largest game company in the world with the largest office in America after Chinese company Tencent and Japanese company Sony.

Unfortunately, the UK KPPU blocked Microsoft's acquisition of this acquisition on April 26, 2023. On the same day, Microsoft announced that they would file an appeal.
