Even though isekai is included in one genre, it turns out that it can still be divided into several subgenres.

Starting from standard isekai, romantic, slow life, outlier, and reverse.

So, to find out the differences between these five subgenres, let's look at the following explanation!

Standard Subgenre

As the name suggests, this subgenre is the format most widely used by manga artists in producing manga or light novels in Japan.

So, it is not surprising that this subgenre is the most popular and has many serial titles to date. And one example is Sword Art Online.

Romance Subgenre

In the romance subgenre, the story focuses on the romantic side rather than the action or adventure side.

In romance, the main character usually has extraordinary abilities that make him very attractive to the opposite sex.

One example of the romance subgenre is Isekai Meikyuu de Harem wo or Harem in the Labyrinth of Another World by Shachi Sogano.

Slow Life subgenre

At first glance, this subgenre is similar to the Slice of Life genre, where Slow Life is usually enjoyed by people who want to take a break from their daily activities.

One of the fundamental differences between standard and slow life isekai is that the main character is not interested in being a hero, adventurer or savior of the world.

An example of this subgenre series is Isekai Nonbiri Nouka or Farming Life In Another World by Kinosuke Naito.

Outlier Subgenre

Outlier subgenres can be said to be isekai that adopt stories from various other genres with a different format from isekai in general.

Generally, this subgenre is filled with lots of innovation and plot twists.

Examples of this subgenre series are Fukushuu wo Koinegau Saikyou Yuusha wa, Yami no Chikara de Senmetsu Musou suru or The Strongest Brave Who Craves Revenge, Extinguish With the Power of Darkness by Ononata Manimani.

Reverse Subgenre

The reverse subgenre focuses on the struggle of creatures from other worlds to adapt and survive on Earth or especially in Japan.

An example of this subgenre is Hataraku Maou-sama! or The Devil is a Part-Timer! by Satoshi Wagahara which tells the story of a demon king and his subordinates who move to Japan after passing through a portal from their home world.

That's our discussion this time regarding the isekai genre. Hopefully this explanation makes you understand this genre.
