Using MOD on PC Games

PC game lovers are certainly no stranger to the presence of MOD. This one element can sometimes increase the excitement of playing games with its many unique variations.

On the one hand, the existence of MOD does seem like piracy (to the detriment of developers), because not all games get permission to modify existing content.

But on the other hand, this can also provide benefits. Because there are not a few MODs from a game that are finally booming and instead end up being an effective marketing move for the developer (people are curious and flock to buy the original software).

In addition, the existence of MOD can also help increase community participation and development.

Sometimes, the fanbase of a game has desires beyond the capabilities that can be realized by the developer. That's where MOD can finally take a role: the community releases various unofficial versions that can satisfy the 'thirst' of the fanbase.

Of course this phenomenon also occurs in various games released by Activision Blizzard. So what made the developer decide like this?

In 2003, the independent Blizzard released an expansion for one of its most successful game franchises, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne (W3: TFT). Of course this received a very good reception from the gaming community at that time.

With such a massive hype, many people then worship 'skill' strategy games this one. Yep, at that time the strategy genre still dominated the gaming industry.

And in the midst of this 'frenzy', a user from the community forum casually made a MOD of this W3: TFT game.

He designed his MOD in such a way as to resemble the 'tower defense' genre, which at that time was widely adapted by mini games made by indie developers such as “GameHouse”.

Of course, initially this was just a form of ridicule leveled at the genre, which is often seen as the habitat of 'bottom board' gaming. But unexpectedly, this MOD, which was just a fad at first, actually won massive popularity and is enjoyed more by gamers around the world.

In fact, this had an impact on the original game: it killed the Warcraft franchise so that the next sequel, Warcraft IV, was no longer released.

Past Impact

So how does this aspect of the past affect Diablo IV? Of course Activision Blizzard will learn a lot from their mistakes.

Due to their 'negligence' in allowing the community to be fully creative, this actually becomes a backlash for their market share and has a fatal impact.

You could say their step of banning the use of MOD is also an effort to control and provide parameters to the community: so that they don't go too far in releasing various MOD versions.

But keep in mind, the opinion above is only a mere form of analysis.

For the official version, quoted from Diablo 4 official forums, this step was taken to keep the playing environment safe and to avoid the existence or distribution of cheats.

The statement made by Adam Fletcher (community manager of Activision Blizzard) on Wednesday (26/7) confirmed that most of the existing MODs are more like cheats. This of course can disrupt the conduciveness of a well-built game environment.

For this reason, if a player is detected using MOD, whatever form it takes, the developer will not hesitate to permanently ban the player's account. Terrific!
