Legend Catalyst's real name is Tressa Crystal Smith who was born in 2705 in Boreas. According to fandoms, this woman whom Smith greeted was 29 years old. He has a fascination with reading crystals and participating in rituals of worshiping the moon.

One of the reasons why Smith adored the moon was because Cleo (the name of the Moon belonging to Planet Boreas) was on the verge of collapse. If we flashback to another Legend Legend Seer born when Cleo was hit by a meteor to disintegrate in years 2708.

Growing up, in 2720, Margo, a close friend of Smith's, invites her friends to save Cleo from Hammond Robotics and other organizations. However, only Smith wants to go along with Margo's plan. As a result, the two of them went to Cleo's surface.

Once there, they sneak into Cleo's mine. Smith saw a tank flowing Ferrofluid. He felt a connection with the Ferrofluid, moreover Smith's necklace was also interested.

What Smith doesn't know, Margo is carrying a bomb. While they were arguing, Specters came and attacked them both. However, Smith manages to defeat Specter by trapping him in a ferrofluid tank.

What he didn't expect was Margo. Even though he was secured by the officers, he managed to detonate the bomb remotely.

Rescuing Cleo With Cleo Recovery Council

That same year, Smith was recruited by the Cleo Recovery Council. They aim to change the shape of Cleo's surface (terraformer) to make it habitable later. Here, Smith became an expert in the field of Ferrofluid.

He is able to control Ferrofluid to create structures to protect workers. He also chose to live in Cleo, South Promenade. He sees this project as a new hope for Cleo.

However, that hope had to be dashed after Seer and Torres “Eduardo” Silva came to the surface Cleo. They want to make Cleo into the Apex Legends arena in exchange for some funds to take care of Cleo.

The decision finally happened. Cleo Recovery Council and Smith were dismissed and replaced with Mercenary Syndicate.

Smith, who at that time felt disappointed, got back up and took part in the Apex Games. Summarizing from several sources, there are two reasons why Smith took part in the Apex Games.

The first reason is he wants to protect Cleo, a place he and his friends cherish. Meanwhile, the second reason is that he will use the Apex Games prize money for support himself and his family.

In the Apex Games, he is good friends with Legend Rampart.

Fun Fact: Is Catalyst Transgender?

The answer is yes. Quoting from Catalyst's explanation from ea.com and Official Youtube Apex Legends, Smith is a transgender – trans woman. He decided to change his gender when he was a teenager.

“Transitioning? That was… sort of hard.”.  Smith, Apex Legends Youtube Videos

"They made her turbulent teenage years (and simultaneous gender transition) easier and less lonely." – EA – Catalyst

Those are two quotes that really confirm that Smith aka Catalyst is a transgender person. Not only that, Respawn Entertainment also uses the Voice Actor of an employee who is also Transgender, Meli Grant.

With Respawn Entertainment's seriousness in making the character Tressa Crystal Smith, Smith aka Catalyst become the first Transgender Legend in Apex Legends.

New Legend Skill Catalyst: Apex Legends' Ferrofluid Ruler

After discussing all of Catalyst's background, it's time to discuss all of Catalyst's skills. You need to know, Catalyst is not a magician, but a Ferrofluid controller. It is a black liquid with very small metal particles.

After getting to know what Ferrofluid is, here's an explanation of each of his skills.

Skill Passive Catalyst: Barricade.

Catalyst's passive skill is called Barricade. Catalyst will "strengthen" the door with the help of Ferrofluid. To open it, the enemy must attack it twice as much as it should. However, specifically for teammates, they can open it without destroying it.

If in one game there is more than one player using Catalyst, Barricade will display a color code. This color code distinguishes between enemy and friend Barricades.

Skill Tactical Catalyst: Piercing Spikes

His Tactical Skill is called Piercing Spikes. Catalyst will throw a ball of ferrofluid onto the floor which will become a sort of 2m x 11m carpet. Enemies that cross it will be slow and give 15 damage.

Catalyst has 2 Piercing Spikes charges. When active, right in the middle there is a ball that can only be seen when the enemy approaches. The ball has 300HP and can be destroyed.

The unique thing is that Catalyst is not affected by Piercing Spikes, no matter who made them. This is also a benefit for other Catalyst players.

Ultimate Catalyst: Dark Veil

Ultimatenya named Dark Veil. Catalyst will construct a 55 meter long Ferrofluid wall with a height that adjusts to the shape of the surface. Enemies that cross it will slow down and their vision will darken for some time.

Enemies and their scanning abilities cannot see beyond these walls, but bullets can still pass through them. If you also play Valorant, this skill is similar to your own wall VipersHarbor, and Phoenix.

And, again, this skill doesn't affect the Catalyst at all. Whoever made it, the Catalyst was unaffected by Dark Veil.

Conclusion: Catalyst Is a Nice Defensive Legend

From the explanation above, Catalyst's background is very interesting. Moreover, she is the first Transwoman Legend in Apex Legends. Meanwhile, in terms of skills, in terms of enemies, it will definitely be very annoying.

But what you have to watch out for when using this Legend is only one: Make sure the enemy team is using Catalyst or not.
