Borderlands 3 Gets Full Crossplay on PS

Borderlands 3

This may take more than a year, but the player Borderlands 3 on PlayStation finally got a taste of crossplay. In 2021, Gearbox introduced full crossplay to the game across its co-op modes.

Unfortunately, player PlayStation restricted, which has happened with several other games in the past. As of yesterday, restrictions have been lifted, and that could be a sign of certain things to come.

Crossplay is one of the most sought-after features in video games today with the emergence of multiple consoles. While each player has personal preferences, what they demand is the ability to play with and against each other regardless of the system used.

Many games are increasingly being launched with crossplay, and Borderlands 3 is receiving similar treatment across its co-op modes. There's only one exception, with Sony limiting crossplay on their console, which has now changed.

Sony keeping the crossplay feature locked on their console is nothing new. There are other games with far more online gameplay than Borderlands 3, which had limited crossplay in the past.

The biggest name, for example, is Fortnite. Epic's iconic battle royale game offers cross-play between handhelds and consoles.

Unfortunately, PlayStation users remain outside the loop and must play among themselves. A similar incident occurred with Rocket League, but as of today, both games have enabled crossplay.

Incidentally, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands released in full crossplay on March 25 this year, which Gearbox also developed. During the game's release, CEO Randy Pitchford announced that Borderlands 3 getting crossplay was something he deemed "inevitable."

With recent developments going in the same direction, this could lead to important changes in the near future. The biggest question that arises is whether all video games will have crossplay on PlayStation in the future.

The concrete answer is something only Sony knows. Video games in general are increasingly shifting towards full crossplay. The potential and scope increases, especially when the game has a hardcore multiplayer aspect.

EA Sports, whose FIFA series does not feature crossplay, is reportedly considering adopting it in their upcoming title. eFootball, Konami's response to soccer fans, already features crossplay on both consoles.

In the latter case, PlayStation doesn't show many boundaries for crossplay adoption on their console.

The console wars have definitely spiced up in recent months, with Xbox's dual-SKU policy running gold. However, Sony has announced PS Plus which is updated, which will compete with Xbox Game Pass. Clearly, the two gaming giants have shown their willingness to go head-to-head.

Sony's decision to limit crossplay may have paid off in previous years, but the gaming landscape is changing rapidly. As hardware capabilities increased, players wanted such limitations removed because they acted as a barrier to playing with friends.

Borderlands 3 now getting crossplay on PlayStation could indicate the potential arrival of more changes. Despite what Sony previously believed, modern times call for a change in policy. It's no surprise they'll be more open to crossplay across consoles in the future.
