Horror is a special genre that often changes the concept of action games, forcing players to run and hide from enemies, not the other way around. A good horror game can haunt you even outside of the game.

List of the Scariest PC Horror Games 2022

In this article, VCgamers will show you the 5 best PC horror games in 2022 that are ready to test your mentality.

Phasmophobia

Phasmophobia is a 4 player online co-op psychological horror. Paranormal activity is on the rise and it's up to you and your team to use all the ghost hunting gear at your disposal to collect as much evidence as possible.

While the game still has jump scares, it doesn't rely heavily on them at all, relying instead on the natural tension of large dark areas and the natural activity (or lack thereof) of ghosts to build tension.

This means, at least for you, the feeling of dread won't go away and you can still feel genuine dread when taking on a new mission, even if I've been there 20 times before, while allowing those jumpscares to linger, being a bit scary.

Voice recognition is something I wasn't sure I would find very enjoyable, but I was wrong. It creates a great experience, actively talking to the entity, trying to provoke it into showing you what it can do, putting your life on the line for the mission, but it has to be done.

It is thrilling and fills you with dread. Having missions that react to the things you say is immersive, one of the game's greatest strengths.

Resident Evil Village

Resident Evil Village

Resident Evil Village (RE8) is a first-person survival PC horror game set in present-day Eastern Europe. Once again, players disguise themselves as Ethan Winters (the same protagonist from RE7), who, along with his wife Mia and daughter Rose, moves to a remote village to start a new life.

However, a terrifying past that they all hoped to leave behind, brutally strikes back at them. Ethan will once again be on a quest to save his family, fighting an enemy even more dangerous than before.

Ethan ends up in some eastern European country, such as Romania, on the outskirts of a seemingly abandoned village. Naturally, the village isn't abandoned but instead is infested with lycanthrope-like bioweapons that have killed or infected all of the villagers.

Gameplay takes a lot of inspiration from RE4 and puts more emphasis on action. You are generously provided with weapons in this game and there are quite a few to find.

The action sequences are more voluminous and involved. The gunplay itself is a lot of fun, shooting all those mooks can be quite satisfying. There is also a merchant, another setback 4, who can upgrade your weapons to make them more powerful.

Exploration is a lot of fun in this regard, because the Village looks beautiful. You can see the area you are about to visit in the distance, similar to Souls.

It's possible to explore at your own pace and the visuals are consistent eye candy unless you start noticing recycled assets from previous REs

Alien Isolation

Alien Isolation is visually stunningly beautiful and detailed, has an excellent atmosphere, and fantastic sound design, intensifying the moments of fear and suspense.

In the plot, you find yourself in the role of engineer Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen Ripley, the protagonist in the classic 1979 film “Alien”, missing since the Nostromo spaceship incident.

The story begins when Amanda takes advantage of an opportunity that can yield important clues to find her mother's whereabouts. However, he instead finds himself trapped in the massive space station Sevastopol, with killer aliens prowling the area.

With survival as your primary objective, you'll have few resources at your disposal, relying on distraction, stealth, and strategy.

And while you can find weapons that can help deal with any enemies you might find, caution is advised, as the sound of battle will attract far more dangerous foes, and your weapons will be useless against them.

Darkwood

Darkwood is a gritty, violent and challenging top-down survival horror developed by Acid Wizard, a small team of Indie developers based in Poland.

Mimicking one of the many survivors of an unknown incident, where a dense forest swallowed up everything these people have ever known, players must figure out the best way to survive the dangers of this mysterious place.

This PC horror game proposes an uncompromising survival horror gameplay, in which resource conservation, attention to detail, careful exploration and knowledge of the environment, enemies, resources are all fundamental to even have a chance of survival.

Unlike many modern titles, the game provides little to no advice on how to progress or what to do, leaving players to figure things out on their own, using found pieces of knowledge, dialogue, and other clues.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a true classic and the benchmark for all horror games other. It's an old school horror experience where what you can't see is scarier than what you can see.

It puts you on the edge of madness and terror and keeps you there without ever pushing you to the point where it's due to the world.

The story is actually very interesting, with the protagonist being an Englishman suffering from amnesia, stumbling around a dark castle looking for answers. But those answers are unlikely to bring you joy.

But while the story is gruesome enough, the game's true brilliance is in the way it injects you with feelings of helplessness and hopelessness.
