In an article from Playstation Universe which contains the process of making the PS5 Pro, an insider games named Tom Henderson explained that the next generation of PlayStation, namely PS6 will likely be released in 2028.

This news is also in line with the leaking of the PS6 release date from an official document belonging to Sony. The document contains information that the PS6 is likely to be released after 2027.

This once secret document is now available for public viewing. This is part of a follow-up investigation by the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) into the pending Microsoft Activision deal.

The document read "When SIE launches the next generation of PlayStation video game consoles (which is likely to be released around [redacted]), it will lose access to Call of Duty and other games from Activision."

Although the release year in the 22-page document has been removed, the small summary of the information in the document is said to point to a release date for the PS6 after 2027.

Since the first original PlayStation launched in 1994, these game consoles have typically cycled between 11 and 13 years.

Meanwhile, the previous video game console, the PS5, was just launched in November 2020. Based on the PS6 release schedule in the document, the PS5 will experience a short replacement cycle.

PS5 will have a life-cycle of only 7 years compared to other PlayStation game consoles. But before the change was made, the PS5 Pro was rumored to be released in the near future.

A source claims that this new generation of PS5 will have a removable disk drive. This disk drive will connect with the game console using USB-C on the back.

Just like the price, the upgrades and features that will be used in the PS6 are still uncertain. Here are some features that might appear on the PS6.

  • built-in wireless, like features wireless charging which includes adapters wireless for headsets on game consoles.
  • Additional storage so that if the internal hard drive does not have the capacity as desired, users can add it as easily as using a model plug-and-go.
  • Virtual Reality (VR) Integration, currently to get the benefits of virtual reality games, players have to buy other devices separately. PS6 is expected to include motion controllers and headsets in one box.
  • A more minimalist design, some people want the PS6 to be made more minimalist than the tall PS5. Making it easier for them to put other items around them more comfortably.
  • UI improvements, improvements to user interfaces later may have easier access in the default web browser as in other PS consoles.
  • Modular upgrades, which allow PS6 owners to upgrade hardware and other components without having to buy a whole new game console like building a PC. Is it possible that the PS6 will have this feature?
