Various Types of Hardware in Computers

Basically, a computer consists of two important parts, namely hardware and software.software).

Hardware itself is a term that describes devices that can be touched or are in physical form.

Meanwhile, software is a device that is not in physical form but in the form of a file.

If you are new to the world of computers, you will probably be unfamiliar with some of the terms in it.

Well, for that this time we will explain about the devices on the computer, especially the hardware. Let's see the following discussion!

The term RAM may have been heard often in electronic devices. Where the layman understands that the smaller the RAM used, the more likely the device is to be slow in operating.

RAM (Random Access Memory) is a type of computer memory used to store data and instructions that are being actively processed by the CPU (Central Processing Unit) for a short period of time.

RAM is an important part of computer hardware because it allows fast and efficient access to data needed for execution by programs.

In everyday use, RAM allows you to run multiple programs simultaneously without experiencing a significant decrease in computer performance.

Storage Devices

Storage devices on a computer have a role in storing data, programs and files in the long term.

Storage devices are divided into several main storage devices in a computer:

Hard Disk Drive (HDD)

Used to store data long-term, including the operating system, programs, and user files.

Solid State Drive (SSD)

Stores data in flash memory without moving parts, providing higher access speeds than HDD.

Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)

GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) is a hardware device specifically designed to process data related to visual displays, namely to produce complex and realistic graphics on the monitor screen.

Initially, GPUs were developed to meet the needs of graphics processing in PC games and other graphics applications, but over time, the role and capabilities of GPUs have expanded.

Now the main function of the GPU is to process graphic data quickly and efficiently. Starting from tasks such as rendering 3D models, drawing graphic elements on the screen, processing video, and running computational operations that require high parallel performance.

GPUs have many parallel processing units that allow them to execute many operations simultaneously.

Motherboard

Motherboard has become the main component in a computer which functions as the "center" or "backbone" of the entire system.

The motherboard will connect and integrate the various hardware components of the computer, allowing interaction and cooperation between them.

The following are the main functions of the motherboard:

Connecting the Main Components

The motherboard has various sockets, slots, and connectors that allow the installation of various major components such as the central processor (CPU), memory modules (RAM), graphics cards (GPU), and storage devices such as SSDs and HDDs.

Managing Communication

The motherboard manages communication and data transfer between installed components. Starting from sending data from RAM to the CPU for processing, transferring data between storage devices and other components, and managing network communication paths through Ethernet ports.

Managing Power and Electrical Distribution

The motherboard provides power circuits for components that require power supply. Starting from the power supply to the CPU, RAM, and other components. The motherboard also supports power management features such as hibernation and sleep.

Providing External Ports

Motherboards usually also have various external ports such as USB, audio, video, and network.

These ports allow external devices such as keyboards, mice, monitors, and network devices to connect to the computer.

Providing Expansion Slots

Expansion slots on the motherboard allow for the installation of additional cards such as sound cards, network cards, Wi-Fi cards, and more, allowing users to customize and enhance the functionality of the computer as per their needs.

Setting BIOS/UEFI Settings

The motherboard stores the system's basic settings in a firmware chip called BIOS (or UEFI on newer systems).

Starting from system configuration, boot order, overclocking, and various other settings that affect system performance and function.

Input Devices

Input devices are hardware devices used to provide information or instructions to a computer. These devices allow you to interact with a computer by providing input in the form of text, images, sounds, or physical movements.

The information provided by the input device will then be processed by the computer to carry out certain tasks.

Here are some devices that are included in the input hardware on a computer:

  • Keyboards
  • Mouse
  • Touchpad and Trackpad
  • Stylus or Pen
  • Scanner
  • Microphone
  • Camera
  • Motion Sensor
  • Touch Sensor
  • Gesture Controller

Output Devices

In contrast to input devices, output devices are hardware used to display or produce information that has been processed by the computer in a form that can be understood by the user.

This device converts data processed by the computer into a form that can be seen, heard, or felt by the user.

In other words, output devices connect the computer to the user to provide the results of data processing. Here are some examples of output hardware:

  • Monitors
  • Printers
  • Speaker
  • Projector
  • Headsets and Earphones
  • Haptic Devices
  • Tactile Display
  • Touch Screen

External Devices

External devices are hardware that is connected to the computer but is not an integral part of the main system.

They can be installed, removed, or used separately from the main computer.

External devices extend the functionality of a computer and allow its users to perform a wider and more specific range of tasks.

  • External Hard Drive
  • USB Drive (Flash Drive)
  • webcams External (including input devices)
  • Routers or External Modem
