Gege Akutami was born in Iwate Prefecture on February 26, 1992. He then moved to Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture when he was in fifth grade of elementary school. 

He started drawing manga by imitating a friend, which later inspired him to become a professional mangaka.

For Gege, Tite Kubo, the manga artist of the Bleach series, is considered the inspiration for his work after reading it. Bleach in fourth grade. Besides Bleach, manga Hunter x Hunter and Neon Genesis Evangelion also inspired him to write manga.

In 2014, Gege began working as Yasuhiro Kano's assistant on the Kiss x Death series. From there, Gege began publishing his first work titled “Kamishiro Sōsa” (神代捜査), a one-shot published in Shueisha’s Jump NEXT! vol. 2 on May 7, 2014.

From there, Gege began to frequently publish his work in the form of one-shots. In 2017, Akutami published Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School (Tōkyō Toritsu Jujutsu Kōtō Senmon Gakkō), a 4-chapter series that aired in Jump GIGA from April 28 to July 28, 2017.

The series later became a prequel to Akutami's later work, Jujutsu Kaisen. He began publishing Jujutsu Kaisen in Weekly Shōnen Jump 2018 issue 14 and released it on March 5, 2018.

In 2016, Gege's one-shot Nikai Bongai Barabarujura was nominated for Weekly Shōnen Jump's 11th Gold Future Cup.

Then in 2019, the Jujutsu Kaisen manga also managed to be nominated for the 65th Shogakukan Manga Awards in the shōnen category.

Gege managed to become the winner of the 2020 grand prize for Jujutsu Kaisen in Mando Kobayashi, Kendo Kobayashi's monthly manga variety show where winners are chosen based on personal taste.

Then in 2021, Jujutsu Kaisen also managed to be nominated for the 25th annual Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize.
