9 Differences Between MPL and MDL Tournaments

For those of you who are new fans of Esports Mobile Legends, you may have watched the MPL and MDL tournaments. Although they are both tournaments, MPL and MDL have differences, you know!

One of the similarities is that both tournaments are official Mobile Legends: Bang Bang tournaments organized by Moonton.

But it turns out, even though they are both from Moonton, they both have differences, both in terms of level, format and the prize pool that will be given.

MPL

According to Liquipedia, Mobile Legends Professional League or MPL is a Professional Esports league tournament for Mobile Legends: Bang Bang.

In this MPL tournament, most of them will feature several pro Mobile Legends players in each country who have been involved in the Mobile Legends world for a long time.

This MPL is organized by Moonton Games together with various local organizers around the world. This tournament was inaugurated since 2017 after the MLBB Southest Asia Cup 2017.

Since its inauguration in 2017, the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia/Singapore have been the MPL trio leagues. Then, followed by Myanmar which joined the MPL in 2018.

In 2021, Cambodia and Brazil joined the MPL series. In the same year, Malaysia and Singapore were separated into independent MPL leagues.

In addition, the CIS (Commonwealth Independent of States) countries have their own MLBB league, namely the Mythic League, which is an official league that is not under the auspices of the MPL.

In 2022, the Middle East and North Africa countries confirmed that they would become new countries introduced to MPL.

This MPL tournament is used to determine teams from each country to go to one of the three official major tournaments from Montoon such as the M World Championship, MLBB Southeast Asia Cup, Liga Latam and MPL Invitational.

MDL

Mobile Legends Development League or MDL is an esports league tournament for Mobile Legends: Bang Bang held by Montoon. This tournament is a Mobile Legends competition for new talented players who want to develop their skills to become pro MLBB players.

There are most of the MPL pro players who come from MDL. There are only two countries that have this MDL tournament, namely:

1. Indonesia: MDL Indonesia
2. Philippines: MDL Philippines

After knowing about the definition of MPL and MDL, below will explain the differences between these two official tournaments from Moonton.

Tournament Level

MPL is the first official Mobile Legends: Bang Bang tournament from Moonton in Indonesia featuring professional teams and players.

In addition, MPL is a professional tournament and pro players will compete against other professional teams.

In this MPL too, Moonton allows the teams that will compete there to use foreign players from abroad who have met Moonton's requirements.

Meanwhile, MDL is the second-level official tournament in Indonesia after MPL and is categorized as a semi-pro tournament for new players.

This MDL tournament will also bring together new Mobile Legends players with quite promising skills and become a place to develop into pro players and move up to MPL.

Similar to MPL, in MDL, Moonton as the organizer allows teams to use foreign players from outside their country.

Duration

The duration of the MDL tournament is not as long as the MPL which takes up to 9 weeks and is held twice a year. However, in this MDL it only runs for 6 weeks.

For the MPL tournament format is actually more complex when compared to MDL. However, both MDL and MPL have similar rules.

In addition, there are several rules and tournament systems that will be tested on MDL. If there are changes or the system is successful in MDL, it will be implemented in MPL.

Number of Seasons

In MPL, there have been more seasons because it was held earlier than MDL and each country definitely has a season gap.

In Indonesia itself, MPL Indonesia has reached 14 seasons until 2024. Meanwhile, MDL Indonesia has reached 10 seasons until 2024.

Performance

Because MPL has been running since 2018, it has produced many pro Mobile Legends: Bang Bang players who are famous for their achievements and skills.

Meanwhile, MDL itself was held several years after MPL so that many new players had not yet shone and many started their careers on the MDL stage.

Participant

When talking about the number of participants, MPL has fewer participants compared to MDL. The number of participants in MPL is 9 participating teams, while in MDL it reaches 16 participating teams.

To be able to join MDL, usually there will be 5 invited teams that will be selected through MDL Play In to determine 2 teams that will qualify.

The two teams that qualified from MDL Play In will compete with 12 MDL teams from the previous season and 8 of them are MPL junior teams.

The reason is because MPL uses a franchise league system that requires participating teams to invest. Meanwhile, MDL uses an open qualification system so that many teams participate.

In each season, there will definitely be several new teams that will pass the qualifying round to compete with various teams from the previous season.

Prize Pool

MPL will provide a larger total prize pool because the tournament level is the highest at the national level, the prize amount reaches IDR 4.5 billion.

Meanwhile, MDL will provide a prize pool worth only Rp. 300 million. Of course, the prize pool given in MPL is bigger because there are more sponsors and they dare to pay a lot, which affects the selling value.

Broadcasting

MPL will be broadcast on streaming platforms such as Youtube, Facebook, Tiktok and Twitch which attracts millions of viewers from all over the world.

MDL is broadcasted via YouTube and Facebook, but the number of viewers is not as many as MPL because this tournament is only a development league.

Number of Viewers

Live streaming of MPL tournaments always attracts the attention of Esports fans almost all over the world every season.

This tournament is usually watched by millions of viewers, especially when popular teams are competing or during the Playoff round to the Grand Final.

Meanwhile, the number of MDL viewers is still small because this tournament is not as popular as MPL.

MDL is also exciting to watch because we can see new players who are predicted to become pro players and move up to MPL.
